When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking.

The Alliance for Waldorf Education and the Boulder-Denver Area Waldorf Schools have partnered with the Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness, local merchants and organizations to promote the 14th Annual Turnoff Week, (formerly known as Turnoff TV Week). Why has “TV” been dropped? Because “screen time” includes far more than television. It now includes an ever-expanding array of electronic tools used at an ever- increasing rate by our children. This year we are celebrating all that is around us. We want to encourage families to Power Down and Dream Big and commit to a Screen Free Week and get involved with friends, family, community and all the great things life in Colorado has to offer.

Alternatives to Screen-Time

  • Read together. Get the family to sit down and read a story together.
  • Play games and organize game nights with your friends, family and community. Get outside: take a walk or run, hike, bike, jump, swim.
  • Plant a garden together. Grow pumpkins for Halloween!
  • Get your children involved in giving back to their community by volunteering at local and regional organizations.
  • Cultivate a hobby with your kids: collect things, make things … there are so many ideas to choose from … go for it!
  • Take a class. Nature based programs abound in our region for children and adults. Learn to play an instrument, study a foreign language or martial art, paint, draw, dance, cook.
  • Go to a concert, a play, a local faire, a farmer’s market.

Go to www.screentime.org for more screen free activities and tips to screen-proof your home and to find out how to support this important non-profit organization committed to healthy children. For more ideas, download the Organizer's Kit

We have put together a schedule of events with local merchants and organizations to provide some fun alternatives to "screen time" for families during Turnoff Week. There are many, many other alternatives to screen time in our communitities. So Power Down-Dream Big and get busy living!
